If you've got a long drive out in the villages, or you just want something hard-wearing at a sensible price, tarmac is hard to beat. It copes well with vans and turning cars and, unlike loose gravel, it doesn't end up in the lawn.
The difference between a good tarmac job and a poor one is the edging and the base. We set kerbs or block edging in concrete first so the tarmac has something to be rolled up against, and we lay it in two courses on a compacted stone sub-base.

How long does a tarmac drive last?
Laid properly on a decent base, many years. Most failures we see are down to a thin base or no edging.
Is tarmac permeable?
Standard tarmac isn't. We plan in a drain, or let water run into a border, so you stay inside the planning rules.
Can you lay tarmac over my old concrete?
Sometimes, if it's level and stable. If the concrete's cracked and moving, it's better to take it out.
